Royal Belum

Royal Belum

Royal Belum is one of the last frontier for trekkers. The word "Belum"  in Malay Language itself means "not yet". Belum is divided into two parts mainly Upper Belum and Lower Belum.

Lower Belum is mainly made of secondary forest but upper Belum or Royal Belum on the other hand has not been touched by modernisation and 90% of its area has not been explored.

Located on the northern part of Temenggor Lake, Royal Belum is inhabited by tigers, elephants, tapirs, horn bills and one of the few places on earth to see Rafflesia flower. Its river are a heaven for fishing and its pristine jungle are believed to be on of the oldest there is.

Why are we talking bout Royal Belum? Because we intend to visit it. For the time being, this would be a survey to see how many will be interested. We don't have the details yet. This expedition is believed to be leisure and will take 4-5 days and the intention is to do it late July or early August this year.

The trip more or less will involve fishing, swimming at waterfall, trekking and lazying around the jungle. This won't be a hardcore trip, so invitation is for anyone who's interested. Please mail to kp_hikers@yahoo.com

Trus-Tamb

Gg Trusmadi-Tambuyukon

It was the second and third highest mountain in Malaysia, both behind Mount Kinabalu in G12 list (12 highest mountain in Malaysia). It's true what we heard before, if you think Mt Kinabalu is tough then don't even think of climbing this two mountains. We wouldn't say it's impossible, even K2 has been conquered.

Trusmadi is relatively easier than Tambuyukon, read carefully... it's relatively. We won't say its easy per say. We managed to reach Trusmaidis summit in a days climb but only managed to reach Tambuyukons summit on the third day. If we were to rank it, it would be HARD for Trusmadi and HARDCORE for Tambuyukon.

Trusmadi has a steep gradient climb but Tambuyukon has extra leech, blood sucking flies, mental  torturing hills, narrow trek with deep fall, slippery slopes (everyone fell), rain and the cold weather. If you plan to climb both of this mountain, you should not be a beginner. By the way, the trek during starting of Mt. Tambuyukon is not marked, so stay close to the guide unless you don't mind getting lost. It will be very hard for naked eye to search for trek in many lower part of this mountain. GPS coverage is limited due to thick tree canopy.

We would rate Mt. Trusmadi as :

Location        Tambunan, Sabah
Diff               7/10 - Hard
View (Peak)   8/10 - Beautiful view
Clean            7/10 - quite clean
Nature          7/10 - Still in good shape
Water           6/10 - No waterpoint at summit

We would rate Mt. Tambuyukon as :

Location        Ranau, Sabah
Diff               9/10 - Hardcore
View (Peak)   9/10 - Breathtaking mountain range
Clean            8/10 - Well kept
Nature          8/10 - In good shape
Water           5/10 - Last water point 4-6 hours from summit

We would say this was a successful hike and everyone was strong mentally to finish the hike. Special thanks to Gogoyeaha (Che Zie) who helped with fuel at Kota Kinabalu.

08 April 09
0930 - Depart from LCCT Kuala Lumpur (KL) to Kota Kinabalu (KK)
1235 - Arrived at KK
~ Meet with Gogoyeaha to pick up our butane
~ Took the mini bus to City Park
~ Had our lunch before walking to Bandaran, its nearby
1530 - Took a van to district of Tambunan
~ By the way, people over here call the van a bus
~ Cost us RM13/pax and we had to take extra 3 seats for our backpack
~ Saw a lot of waterfall such as Masakod Waterfall along the way
~ Stopped at one of the rest house to visit the rest room
~ The road was mostly uphill and was misty

~ We arranged to have our breakfast early, it can be done via TVRC
~ The food? hmmm... The only place we had, so what can you say
0830 - Our ride (4 wheel drive) picked us at TVRC
~ Off road we went for 35 minutes, then the 4WD was stuck in mud
~ We pushed, pulled and even tried to lift it but nothing worked
~ Second 4WD came to to rescue and pulled our from the mud
~ Little we knew that this incident would cause us the sunset view
             later in the evening
0940 - We moved on to the drop point
1040 - Arrived at the drop point and unloaded our gears
1050 - We started hiking
~ It was muddy and the trek looked like an old logging road
1130 - Reached last water point, the next one is around 4-5 hours away
1315 - Had our lunch at UMS Camp
~ It was a consensus that should we reach Camp Cabin later than 3 pm
we will not pursue to the peak the same day because it gets dark
early by 1 hour in this part of Malaysia
1700 - Reached Camp Cabin, 2 hours past time line
~ We decided to move on, so much for the earlier consensus

~ Missed the sunset because we were too late to reach the peak
~ The rain started pouring not long after we set our tent
          ~ There was lightning

10 April 09
0600 - Woke up to catch the sunrise
~ The wind was strong, so strong it manage to push me 2 steps behind
~ I took cover behind some bushes, it was cold
0730 - Cooked breakfast and hot coffee
0840 - Started descending from the peak
0958 - Reached Cabin Camp
1015 - Started hiking out from Cabin Camp
1040 - Reached the garden (Taman Bunga)
~ It's named as garden because a lot flowers are found here
~ After the garden, we were faced with 2 very steep hills
1220 - Reached the area where we started climbing when we came yesterday
~ Saw a pair of bear footprint along the old logging road
~ The print was kinda small so was not a cause to be concerned unless
             there's
a mother bear around, that would have been a
1356 - Reached drop point
~ The 4WD is not here yet, so the guide borrowed atans cell phone and
             called the driver
~ Checked in, washed our cloth and dried our backpacks
~ Cooked fried rice and salted fish for dinner

11 April 09
0800 - Checked out and took a van (bus) to Ranau
~ Traveled on a narrow old road
1100 - Arrived at Poring Lodge
~ It is located 500 m from Poring Hot Spring

and went all the way to Kg Monggis (Mt tambuyukon starting point)
to make sure the guide will be there tomorrow

~ Crossed three shallow river and the road was not that bad
1020 - Reached Monggis Sub Station
~ Meet the guides (2 of them as 3 climbers need 1 guide)
~ It's necessary as the route at Mt. Tambuyukon are not marked and

1045 - We handed over our climbing permit and started the 14KM trek
1215 - Reached Kulat Shelter (2.2KM)
1320 - Kera Shelter
~ The guides commented we are walking too fast
~ Errr.... no comment as i was literally walking fast to avoid the fly
~ Yup.. the fly will buzz around your ear and then will try to bite you
~ Not to forget the leech, ha ha.. in abundance, this mountain should
             be named Mt Leech instead
1528 - Reached Wuluh Camp
~ Had a small discussion and we decided to push to Kepuakan Camp
1654 - Reached Kepuakan Camp
~ It rained and we had to walk along narrow steep trek, where the drop
is more than 30 meters down
~ The trek was slippery and everyone had their share of falling

Our guide : Mf Jeff
Man with little words.. i think our conversation is less than 20 words in 2 days
He told us Trusmadi is tougher than Tambuyukon.. yeah rite..

1/2 hour into off road, we were stuck
We tried to help, pulling, pushing, shaking, even lifting
Well, we have to try rite..

..and after everything else failed, the real help came

we moved on to the entry point

Immortalising our name as Mt Trusmadi climber
